Here's a blast from the past!
I was a first time ceramics student way back in the fall of '72', at San
Juaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA. Bruce Duke was the instructor (and a
fine one!), we used this for a semester or two, then stopped when the flak
about lead started flying. A good glaze at the time, very reliable, tho a
bit fluid in reduction. Not sure what it would look like with a substitute
flux for the lead.
Tizzie...We fired to ^9 to ^10
Kingman Feldspar...............450
White Lead....................2250
Silica.........................694
(EPK) China Clay...............660
Frit 3134......................855
Tin Ox.........................243
Sorry this is a batch formula, my HyperGlaze is tucked in the bowels of
this electronic beast, I know it was there last week!
Explosions...
I was lucky enough to land the job of Lab Assistant at Delta Coll. a year later.
The only pots to explode in gloss firings were those that were reglazed and
immediatly refired (and at that, most were fairly thick in some dimension).
We had a practice of setting reglazed pots on top of the kiln for at least
one firing BEFORE they were refired.
I know this is a couple of weeks late, but I was gone for a while
mid-April, and am just now getting to all the mail. Still haven't finished!
By the by, does anyone out ther have any information on Bruce Duke. He was
living in Stockton California last I knew, but I lost his address some time
back. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob
