Emily - I just picked up an old book by Carlton Ball at a used book store and
sure enough if has his Tizzy glaze. Here goes - exactly as it appears in the
book
"The following glaze is excellent for low-fired earthenware, cones 08 to 04. It
is also an excellent glaze for any temp. up to cone 10 in oxidation firing. When
applied thin, there is no excessive running: the quality of the clay shows
through the glaze beautifully.
Tizzy Glaze ^08-10
Flint 463 grams
White lead 1500 gr.
Feldspar 300 gr.
Kaolin 420 gr.
Frit 3134 570 gr. (Ferro Corp.)
For a translucent glaze, add 162 grams of tin oxide. For an opaque glaze, add
300 grams of tin oxide. The glaze is not effective as a transparent glaze; some
tin oxide should be added.
For colors, add the following:
Black Black U.G. 182 Grams
Light Turquoise Copper carbonate 73
Rust Black iron oxide 146
Chinese blue Chinese blue U.G. 182
Cobalt blue Cobalt oxide 73
Blue Green Copper Carb. 109
Cobalt oxide 9
Green Copper carb. 182
Pale blue Turquoise blue 182
#500(Harshaw Co.)
So have fun - glad I had something to contribute!

Thanks so much to all four of you kind folks who dug out your Carlton Ball
texts. What we suspected about the lead was true. SIGH, but I'll trot it
right off to class and I'm leaving right now and hope to obtain many brownie
points for YOUR good efforts. :-) Emily in Astoria OR where my kiln is
rusting!
