Cheryl,
I'm still too busy getting through the mail to get back onto Clayart yet.
The best part of the trip for me was the pots, and seeing a few friends.
I'd been there before, 30 years ago, so the sites were not new to me,
just
to my daughter. Don't get me wrong, I loved the trip, but the highlight
was
the pots, which just affirms my love of clay (which I sometimes question,
when so many things discourage you!) Heaven on earth was Contemporary
Ceramics, in London. They have shelves devoted to each artist, and all
the
names we know so well - Ruthanne Tudball, Margaret Firth, John Rogers,
Jeff
Osterich, John Leach, etc, etc, plus folks we've never heard of who are
terrific. I limited myself to three pots. Should have had my camera
with
me to take photos of all the work...just wonderful!
Also enjoyed the huge pot collection at the Victoria and Albert.
Overwhelming - something for everyone.
Got to the Percival David collection of Chinese pots, small but worth it.
Found the 6' tall blue crystalline vase at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris and
was just about knocked over physically just on viewing it. It is just
incredibly tall, and how they got the gorgeous crystals to stay in place
and
not run off the steep sides alludes me.
The disappointments were that the Gallerie Besson in London was closed so
I
couldn't see the Rie, Leach, Cardew and Coper pots, and the few galleries
at
the V &A that contained some of the same was also closed. Big time,
Grrrrrr!!!!! Also, the Brother Thomas perported to be at the Musee
D'Orsay
was not to be found. But, I've at least seen lots of his work here in
Boston. I have NOT seen pots by the others and am quite disappointed.
But
then, I just think of Contemporary Ceramics and I feel better. It's
heartening to think there is such a store on this planet, solely, and
proudly, displaying wonderful pots. Yes!
If you think it would be of value to anyone else, you can post this to
Clayart for me. I'll be back on in a bit, most likely.

Dear Clayarters, especially you Brits,
My husband and I are going to London for 8 days on May 8. We have tickets
for 3 shows and are taking a one day side trip to Canterbury as we have never
been to Kent. We are not renting a car this time and I'd like to know about
any pottery venues that we might visit using public transportation. Last time
I was in London I found a pottery supply store where I bought some interesting
tools but I don't remember where it was. Any information on galleries, etc.
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Debby Grant in NH

I am planning a trip to London for about a week, and would appreciate any
info on ceramic exhibits/galleries/local potters to see. Also trying to find a
reasonably priced hotel near the tube in the city. Also I am considering one
side trip, or day trip, by train.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Susan

Hello Susan;
If you can make it. Feb 9-12 is the COLLECT at the V&A, not to be
missed. Major contemporary makers - very high quality work and high
prices. There's one day when all the potters are there to talk to.
(Tube: South Kensington)
'Table Manner' at the Craft Council (Angel Tube) is very excellent. You
can touch 100 mugs by, mostly, well known UK makers. Teapots galore.
Until Feb 26, 2006

Some more craft info here:
http://www.ceramicreview.com/links.asp
These are the usuals:
Craft Potters Association at Marshall Street (W1)
British Museum (Russel Square)
Perceval David Museum (Russel Square)
Victoria and Albert Museum - ceramics floor is closed, but there is
plenty to see, still(South Kensington)
Write me on what dates you are coming, and I can tell you what shows are
on at which galleries.
As for hotels, this is bare-bone and inexpensive. Very tiny rooms.

(Bring ear-plugs)
Bath is great for a day trip; Roman baths, Jane Austene, great seafood.
(I didn't expect there are so many Roman ruins in the UK!) It's 2 hours
train journey from Paddington Station
Oxford is nice too; famous University; Science Museum. There's a pottery
show in October in Oxford. One hour train journey from Paddington Station.
The Windsor Castle is 45 mins train journey from Paddington Station.
If you book the train one month ahead, you get discount 'saver tickets'

Please feel free to write me for more info.

There is no shortage of stuff to see and do in London even without a
side trip. A lot depends on when you are going to be there.
If you're in London the week of February 6th there is a terrific
craft show called "Collect" at the Victoria & Albert Museum. There
will also be a lot of shows around it. Ruth Ballou and I are already
planning to be there for the 9th and the 10.
I like to stay here, it's right beside the British Museum, within
easy walking distance of Contemporary Applied Arts, The Craft Potters
Association Gallery, Oxford street, the theatre district, Covent
Garden, etc, etc.
