underglazing on bisc, the sequel

I realized after I posted my response to Sharon that she was probably
asking a different question than the one I answered.

If the question is how do you keep the underglazes to stay put when you
glaze the pot if you don't fire the underglazes on first then that is a
significant issue. Because those underglazes are all meant to be fired
on first.

Now there are two issues here, one is during application of the glaze and
the other is how the thing will get through the firing.

For a long time I was doing alot of glaze pencilling (which I no longer
do because I wrecked my wrist doing it) and that all went on after the
bisc and I have to spray a coat of glaze to keep that all in place while
it gets glazed. As I mentioned before that is a huge hassle and of
course must be done safely. Lately I'm getting by with slapping the
glaze onto the problem areas with a moppy-type brush filled sparingly
with glaze that's not watered down at all and that seems to work pretty
well except over black pencil or the chalks.
Over the colored pencils it seems to work fine. Problem areas being
those I have messed with after the bisc.

In my experience certain colors tend to run quite alot under the glaze
during the firing if they're not fired on before hand. Midnight EZ
is a real runner for example and I avoid using it at all after the bisc.
So if you're doing plates that's not an issue but for vertical surfaces
definitely something to consider.

The other problem just as a general observation is re-firing. Colors
that might run a little bit during the glaze firing can tend to run quite
alot more if the pot has to be refired. And I've also noticed that some
colors tend to just sort of spread this halo around them in the refire.

Talk about running, I've really run this subject right into the ground!
Hope some of this is helpful.

Eleanora...tonight is first frost around here.
