Several people have asked me for references to literature on vanadium
pentoxide toxicity, so I am posting them here. As with any other chemical,
the most readily available source is its Material Safety Data Sheet
(MSDS), which in the U.S.A. is available on request from any company that
sells the chemical, e.g. Aldrich (tel. 800/771-MSDS). They are also
available on the net, e.g. at .

Summaries of the literature on the toxicity of specific compounds are
published in Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Reports.
Reports on Vanadium pentoxide were published in vol. 2, no. 2 and in vol.
8, no. 4.

NIOSH and OSHA. 1978. Occupational health guidelines for vanadium
pentoxide fume. In "Occupational Health Guidelines for Chemical Hazards."
Cincinnati OH, NIOSH and OSHA.

Zenz, C. 1988. Vanadium and its compounds. In "Occupational Medicine:
Principles and Practical Applications," 2nd ed. Chicago: Yearbook Medical
Publishers.

"Toxicity of Trace Metals" [full reference not at hand]

Here is what one major chemical company, J. T. Baker, says on its MSDS for
vanadium pentoxide:

"HLTH HAZ: NAUSEA, VOMITING, DIZZINESS, GASTROINTESTINAL IRRITATION & MAY
BE FATAL. CHRONIC:KIDNEY DAMAGE, LIVER DAMAGE. TARGET ORGANS: RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM, EYES, SKIN...MAY BE FATAL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. EXCEPTIONAL
HEALTH HAZARD...."
