For five years I worked in our basement without complaint. We now work in a
studio attached to the house that served as a car port before it was framed in.
The window where I throw looks to our backyard, 15 acres of previous hayfield
and future forest. I've planted several hundred trees and shrubs and have
carved out walking trails. In the middle of the rolling field is a majestic
hickory tree. Barn swallows, bluebirds, and hummingbirds share the view.
Closer to the house I can see the kids' sandbox and playground--very important
as I try to monitor their activities. It's a pleasant view, but i also like
having room for a display area in the studio so I can look over and see what
some fired pottery looks like. I can review the look of glazes or check on
forms or sizes of pieces already fired. Roger and Ruth in Paw Paw Michigan,
expecting record lows this Weds night, and maybe frost!
