I believe the reason one uses vinegar on sunburned skin is because it
evaporates quickly and cools the skin. I thought that the idea of using
vinegar was that it also evaporated much more quickly than water, and
also somehow held the clay particles in suspension differently from
water. There is definitely a different quality to a slip made with vinegar
and one made with water. I am not a chemist so can't say anything
about the "real" reason for this...
My two cents---all I can say is--it works really well for me, on ALL clay
bodies. I've been able to repair cracks with vinegar slip and attach mug
handles that have been broken when green.
