Hi Phil,
I live on the Big Island and was on Maui earlier this month. I found
the Maui Crafts Guild located in Paia a worthwhile stop. You could stop
in there and get a business card for Sandi Vitarelli. She is regarded
as being the best potter on Maui by many Maui potters. Give her a call
and see if you can visit her studio (100 cu. ft. gas kiln she built,
etc.). No harm trying. I would have, but I was too busy with a
workshop at the Hui Noeau in Makawao. This is a place where people can
take various classes. The ceramics teacher there is Jennifer Owens.
There are some nice galleries in Makawao with wonderful ceramic pieces.
I didn't get around to other parts of the island, but I hear it is more
commercial there, like Lahaina which has many galleries that are geared
toward the tourist market. Have a nice trip.
