i have posted several ideas on volcanic ash glazes...and felt i should
again...i have used a combination of 60 ash/40gertsley borate for years in
the electric kilns at school...it was our base glaze. it has a wide range
of cones, from 1-4 at least... it can be opaqued with tin or zircopax. and
almost any colorant will work...and is it easy to make, use, it has shelf
touch like concrete, and is very inexpensive.
a sliding scale of gertsley will let you ride up the cones...cone 11
stoneware might be 80/20. research here is best...and as others have said
it would probably be fine all alone... but i find that a little gertsley
does wonders for ash. (pumice)..
i have worked on some articles pertaining to volcanic ash and perhaps they
will be published soon... mel jacobson / minnesota. 612 935 5943
