Have you checked your actual supply voltage?
In the UK we have recently ( in the last two years) had our supply
voltages rationalised across the European Union. This meant that the
nominal voltage in the UK changed from 240 to 230 volts. With the
tolerance changes that came in to effect at the same time it was
generally thought that this nominal change would not affect many users.
My personal experience was a very marked shortening of 240 volt kiln
element life as you describe. I have since changed to 230 volt elements
and the difference is marked and I am now expecting to get over 100
firings from this set.
