Hi Everybody,
My web site(http://www.tamucc.edu/~lkatz/) is coming along and I have
decided to get it linked to the University's homepage now so it is out
there.
It has only the beginnings of images of my work and my students, but it
does contain the text of several articles that I have written over the
years, glazes that are in Use at TAMUCC, and links to our Art Department
site. It is far enough along that you might find it interesting,
although there still are a few dead links.
We are doing well down here, although very busy. I am getting ready for
a show at a local community college and the grand opening of ALICE a
multimedia/performance that will take place at the NCECA (national
Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) conference this coming April.
We will try to get a few images of the work in progress before then.
Alice was inspired by Rhythm of Plastic Skin and two smallish photgraphs
of it can be accessed at http://www.tamucc.edu/~lkatz/studentimages.html

Greetings Fellow List addicts,
Just to give you all some idea of what we do at Bath Potters Supplies
when we're not lurking or mailing or setting fire to things, we have put
most of our catalogue up on our website on: http://www.bathpotters.demon
..co.uk The site is still under construction (and I'm trying to find a
better photo for the intro) but it's a start.
See what you think.

The University of Dallas is just setting up a website for the NCECA '98
exhibits, at least some of them. Not finished yet, I think, but there are
quite a few done, including some work from the Harding Black/Juan
Quezada exhibit and works from the Native American exhibit (appropos,
with all the discussion of symbols/imagery on Native American pots).

The site is: www.udallas.edu/artdept/nceca98

Take a look, don't know if they have email/response up yet, but Dan
Hammett said they'd be glad of input. Also think they have at least
one or two pieces unidentified, want to know who might recognize so
they can attribute.

I have just created a simple website through AOL and hope to expand it soon.
There seem to be so many sites such as Guild.com, Wholesalecrafts.com,
Artffinity.com, Atmallofamerica.com, Artmecca.com, Craftsonline.com
Craftsfaironline.com, Passion4art.com, etc., and so many search engines to
list with.

I would appreciate knowing what web-based options other artists have found
success with. Any advise would be appreciated.

Susan,

Here is a list of the engines. It will take time. I only did a few big
one to start and others showed up unsolicited.

http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/World_Wide_Web/Searching_the_Web/Search_Engines_and_Directories/

Before you register your site, one helpful thing for search engines are
META tags. Do them at least on the home page which is where they will
enter your site right after they check for a robot.txt file (next)

http://eons.com/metatest.htm
http://cyberalley.homestead.com/siteanalysis.html

So you will need a robot.txt file which contains the places/directories you
don't want searched on your site:

http://info.webcrawler.com/mak/projects/robots/norobots.html

Don't forget to start using the address/URL of your site on any
correspondence, paper or electronic. That's the best advertisement for it.

I hope this helps,

Fabienne

Susan,
I have myweb site up and running for about a year and have experienceed
increasing response to it. My goals were a little different than the others:

I wanted to get my work in front as may people as possible.

I wanted to proved a means toeducate people about Maolica and tin glazed
earthenware and eventually serve as a point were others interested in the
technique could find info about it.

I wanted to have it serve as way to work with customers over the phone.

and I hoped to generate sales.

Thus far it has met those goals and then some. I have found that adding my
URL to everything that goes to a customer from my bags to my business cards
to my information cards I hand out at shows seems to have continued to
increase my sales. An interesting side effect has been an almost
legitimizing of me as a an artist in business. When I mention to customers
that I have a web site that has many other things availible their eyebrows
raise as if to validate me as a "real" business.

I went the route of registering a .com after trying the long url route
(.uswest.net/~my name) that became to cumbersome and people couldn't
associate it with me. It has more than paid off.

Since I am somewhat computer litereate I designed my site myself using
Microsoft Font Page. It took me about a week to a week and half to do so.
Doing my won site made it easy for me to update it on a regular basis. I
have a digital camera and shoot my new work as it is completed andpost it
right away. This works well since my work is largly one of a kind.
I think whether you decide to register real .Com or use one of the long
ones that result from a basically free site depends on your intentions with
the site and your customer base.
Finally, I use a free service called "Hitbox.com" that tracks hits,
including number of new visitors, domains, referring domains, sequence of
visitors' movement through my site etc. This info has been invaluable in
helping me determine the general likes and dislike of the public as
represented by those who move through my site.
If you want to see my site it is :

http://www.palemoonstudio.com

Hope this has helped, feel free to contact me off list.

our dear friend john hesselbreth reminded me,
in very firm terms.

go to register.com and get a domain name.

he is correct.

if you are serious, well, do it right.

i have always held back, as pclink
was very good to me, had my website up
and working, and things were steady.

now i see that i was wrong. have to
get my own domain name.
thank you john. a good firm critique from a
professional is good for all of us. thank god
we have them here on clayart.

fyi- omnis.com registers your domain and it's cheaper than register. com. I
know since I have one with each. I think it was 12 0r 15.00 when I did it.

FYI bigdaddy.com is only $8.95 for a year (even cheaper when registering for
more than 1 year). I'm happy with them.

Everyone who puts in the time should buy a real site. That way you don't
have all the crap to deal with. No advertisements, no pop ups, no extra
words to remember when trying to find your site.

I pay $25 a month, I have 2 email accounts attached to my site and unlimited
space on their server. I also have unlimited internet connection and 24/7
help from them. I would pay to have a dial up anyway. So I pay a bit more
and have a site. And with all that space my husband piggybacks his site on
mine (he does comics).

By the way I just changed it out completely (I get bored easily). Even have
some new work.

another good one to look at is netsol.com
you can register your name and also for i think it is 12 bucks a year, pay
for a redirect of the domain name to anywhere your site is hosted... alot of
companies do this for a monthly charge, I have found them to be the best,
then if you have aol or earthlink or many other online providers check to see
if you get free space (not really free cause your paying for it whether your
using it or not)
