wedging table surface

Another data point to muddy the waters:
After I built my mom a kickwheel, she dutifully took a class, but gratefully
went back to drawing when my dad got the pottery bug. He found a 3' X 3'
pumicecrete slab that worked great as a wedging surface. Not as smooth or as
easy to clean as plaster o paree but didn't fleck off in the clay either.

I'd try garden shops or building supply, as I'm not quite sure where he got it.
