To anyone who has sold work throught retail outlets: what is "keystone"
pricing? I have read this term in several magazines and do not know what
it means.
Thanks
Chris

Keystone pricing usually refers to a 100 % profit markup or doubling the
purchase price to make the sale price. An Item that cost $50 would sell
for $100.

As it was explained to me one time, many mail order catlogs practice
":keystone" pricing or a 500% markup.

Keystone refers to the 50% discount you would give to a retail
outlet off the price of your work. If your suggested retail price is
$100, he will expect you to keystone it to him for $50. This is a
pretty standard markup in the retail field for our kind of work.

At least in the jewelry/garment/accessories world "keystone" means that the
retailer sells at 2 times the wholesale price. (Or, that the
wholesaler/manufacturer gets 1/2 the retail price).

Chris,
I think they mean that they take the wholesale price of the work and double
it and add shipping.

It means the price which you need to receive, i.e. what is usually called
the wholesale price.
Wholesale price is:
fixed costs (rent, light, depreciation, interest payments etc.) + variable
costs (wages, materials, firing costs) + marketing costs (advertising,
booth fees a trade shows, agent's mark up etc) + profit.
The keystone price is the point around which other prices may be
calculated.
