white porcelain

Walter,

The porcelain that you are using is a variation of the " equal parts body " and
it is not very white to begin with, seeing as ball clay contains a small but
significant amount of iron.

For a whiter body I just use Miller 550 or 570 and this is very white with no
ball clay. It throws well as porcelain goes. The clay portion of the body is
Grolleg and some form of plasticiser, probably Bentolite L. I'm able to make 16
pounds behave fairly well on the wheel-----no cracking as you widen the form.

Miller has been taken over by Laguna and you can reach them there.

Hello mud dancers:

Does anyone out there know where I can get white porcelain in San Diego?
How about Southern California? All I have been able to find is grey. Many
thanks,

Nicole

>HI Nicole:

Try Laguna Clay's Kenji Porcelain. In oxidation it is white. It does take on
grey in reduction if it is bare. Good luck.

Hey >Donald Goldsobel:

Thanks for your reply, is the Kenji porcelain white when wet? There are
two other porcelains @ laguna that I know of but the only one I have been
able to purchase was grey - I think it was called S porcelain. TIA

So where is Mipana? We have Jacaranda trees here in L.A. tto. They look
like purple ghosts.
Kenji is white from wet on, even in reduction. It throws like jello unless
you keep the water to aminimum.

I use Dave's porcelain from Laguna. It has good throwing qualities and is
pretty white., not grey, except in heavy reduction.
good throwing and good pots.

Hey Donald:

MiPana is in Cardiff-by-the-Sea -- North County San Diego. You answered my
question, thanks. There is a place here that does carry Dave's porcelain
and can get Kenji. My primary interest is in handbuilding and pinching --
I have a book of Mary Rodgers and I swear I read somewhere that she
preferred the white porcelain to the grey. The problem I have had with the
greys I have tried has been they dry too slowly and I have a hard time
getting them thin enough. They throw fine and come out white in oxidation
but I am really looking for a transluscent quality --

I am also fully aware the problem is more likely to be mine rather than the
clay body -- but hey -- I'll try this! Thanks again,

Nicole
