wholesale, retail, the whole ball o' wax resist

I live in Greensboro, which is right beside High Point, NC, "Furniture
Capital of the Universe". Four weeks a year, High Point literally CRAWLS
with money in the form of furniture buyers/sellers from all over the
globe. The rest of the time, the furniture places are open to those
folks who can afford the likes of Thomasville, Broyhill, etc.

Someone approached me today with the idea/request that I should open a
shop in a space near the furniture market where during the market I would
wholesale to buyers, and do retail and consignment the rest of the year.

The mind boggles at the thought, because I have no concept of the startup
costs involved, and I've done wholesale a whopping ONCE.

Any tips, ideas and/or feedback are appreciated.

Lisa...
If you decide not to rent shop space in town then consider this...
Put up an attractive sign out in front of your house/studio along with an
OPEN flag and display a few pieces of pottery so that they are visible to
the road traffic (I place pots out on stumps near the road side and the
customers love it...it is the organic touch which they like..) and watch
the tourist come to you!...

Lisa,
I'd like to see someone jump on that opportunity! How about a clayarters
wholesale outlet..... we can all take a ride on the furniture roller coaster
during those months. Any business orientated person interested in tackling
setting one up?

when visiting Maine's coastal areas I was very inpresses with the local? Road
signage whereby local small shop/businesses each had a small but tasteful
state DOT looking sing on the main highway with the shop name and respective
distance in miles.How I wish that would catch on nationally it would do
wonders for us. Does anyone from Maine on the internet CLAYART (I"m not
shouting) know how that system works so we could suggest it tothe local
legislators? Thanks. Margaret. by the way all those bean reciepes made me
remember mom's so I am trying them in another way in my castiron pot on my
newly installed kerosene heater tomorrow after they soak over night. Thanks
