Hi Shino enthusiasts:

This is the formula that I have for Wirk's carbon trap. I got it from Dave
Shaner in about 1980. Warren MacKenzie told me that this glaze was
developed by a student of his named Virginia Wirk. It's a great Shino and
is very reliable. Thanks Virginia!! If anyone has more info on this glaze,
please post it. If my info is not correct, fire up the flamethrowers and
let me know about it please!

Wirk's Carbon Trap Cone 9-10 Red.

Kona F-4 Feldspar 15.0
Nepheline Syenite 50.0
Spodumene 12.5
Soda Ash 3.5
Ball Clay 16.0
EPK 3.0

Bentonite 2.0

This glaze will develop the nice orange-red "fire color" on an iron bearing
claybody or over iron slips. It is white to grey where thick. It will
craze like nobody's bizness over just about any clay because of the high
Neph Sy content and the Spod isn't high enough to offset the expansion. But
what the heck, it's a nice glaze!!

I belive the woman who developed the glaze is Virginia Wirt , thus the glaze
is Wirts carbon trap, and yes it is a great glaze although it does not seem
to trap carbon as other shinos do.
