Hi everyone,

I just finished firing the kiln, using some new Orton pyrometric cones
(when did they change colour?). I had an old Orton white^5 new ^6, new ^7,
noticed the ^5 was completely over flat, the ^6 and ^7 went over slightly
same time same amount much later than expected, especially the 6.
This has happened both times I've used them. I thought it might have been
my doing the first time but the cones seem fine. The new cones seem to be
firing slightly higher than the old white ones at least the ^6.
Has anyone firing at cone 6 oxidation noticed any difference with the
Orton colour coded pyrometric cones?

Strange- in Ottowa, the tulips are growing, but in Alabama, the Bulbed
plants all got their little tails frozen off !! They started up, hit a bad
(for Alabama, 11 deg F) couple of nights, and they now sit there, dead leaf
tops on new (later) growth, with only a few blooms)--- The weather people
here refer to this as "Canadian Air"
Such is life--
back to the cones--- I, too , have had this, but slightly different.

in Testing a small Electric kiln I had repaired the switches on, I put pats
with ^4,5,6,and 7 in several places. This thing had 4 switches, and I wanted
to check that my sequence was OK.
The cones were all new (within the year), except the ^7, which was about 20
years old. (They had been stored in a sealed jar)

During the firing, I noted the ^7 on the pat infront of the peep was bent to
touch the ^6 in front of it. This was true at four locations in the kiln (It
was pretty even).
I checked the cones themselves for proper marking before the next firing
(all OK), and the phenomenon repeated on the next firing; the old ^7 s were
bending before the ^5&6 were.

I am puzzled, but with the glazes seeming to like the joke, I'm not going to
worry.

Hi Anne

There have been changes to the orton cones. My understanding is the old
cones (5,6,7) were dropping too soon and they have been reformulated. To
make maters more complicated there are two kinds now.

From our clay testing at Tuckers I have noticed a difference and believe
the new cones are an improvment in accuracy. It seems to be true however
that 6 and 7 are dropping at the same time.

I must add I am unsure of what is happening and I wish someone would
contact The Orton Foundation and post their explanation so we could all
understand what to expect and the difference between the two kinds
available.

I noticed the color change in orton cone 6 from white to pink about a year
ago. I called Orton who told me they changed the cone to better handle
moisture in the kiln atmosphere, but you should not realize any difference in
firing results. I have not seen any difference in my pots.
