I have been on a study sabbatical this semester to develop a new course for
the art dept - women's issues in art. The Chadwick book - 'Women, Art and
Society" - especially the newest edition provides a good overview.
One of the best sources for an overview of the work that has been done in
the US is in September, 1987, v 69, n 3, Art Bulletin: Feminist Critique of
Art History. The writings of British art historians/critics Griselda
Pollock and Katy Deepwell are essential in familiarizing yourself with
current feminist theory -- it's not for the faint of heart! References to
many French feminist writers, Lancan, semiotics, subject versus object
issues... these folks question the very structure of art history (not only
as it applies to women but to all 'others' and addresses issues of high art
versus low art).
The National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, DC) has an excellent
web site - easy to reach on any search vehicle. Katy Deepwell has
published at least two issues of N.Paradoxa - an internet feminist art
journal. Both sites have incredible amounts of information -
bibliographies, lists of internet resources, criticism, individual artist
information. If you have trouble finding either on the internet, contact
me privately.
BTW - I don't remember anyone mentioning the Beatrice Wood exhibition at
the Craft Museum in NY - but I have been out of town - great show. Garth
Clark and his partner's tableware set (by BW)is included in the exhibition
-- cratered luster glazes -- deadly and beautiful!
