gold glaze 518... what it is, what it isn't

The Amaco lustre gold glaze #518 that is being discussed is not a true
lustre that is applied over a glaze that has already been fired. It
does not have any oil of lavender or other smelly medium oils in it.

It is a saturated manganese dioxide glaze. That's why in the Amaco pint
container it is black in color.

When I use this glaze I fire the bisque to cone 04.
I glaze fire to cone 05.

The key to making this glaze turn goldish is to brush on three thick
coats of the glaze.
If it comes out dull brown color, the glaze was either applied too thin,
(not enough coats) or the kiln did not have enough air flow in it. I
fire the kiln quickly with all of the switches on right from the start
and the peeps open and the kiln vent is on.

*** Since this glaze contains manganese there is the serious risk of
manganese poisoning from breathing the fumes while this glaze fires. I
fire my kiln overnight and never linger in the kiln room when this glaze
is being fired. Manganese poisoning damages the brain and may cause
symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease and even death. If you are not
confident in your ability to manage the firing of this glaze in a safe
manner, avoid using it. *** (It is not dangerous in its wet liquid form.)

I have a picture of a clay mummy that a 6th grade student made on the
web. You can see it here...

on my next project and if it does not work, I will try another.
