When I was a kid I had one drawing book.
The How to Draw Everything Book by Arthur Zaidenberg.
It was a book that went from A to Z and had illustrations of all kinds
of things.
I used to copy things out of the book all the time.
I rediscovered the book one day while looking for fishing gear for my
son in my parents attic.
The cover was torn off and some of the pages were falling out but that
book is still precious to me.
(My parents didn't save much of the stuff from when I was a kid.)
I wanted to show this book to my elementary school students and explain
how I learned to draw using this book...
but the book was in such fragile condition that I didn't want to be
hauling it around to show 700 elementary school kids.
I was on e-bay one day when it dawned on me to search for it. There was
not one available that day, so I saved the search and checked the box to
be notified by email when one is posted. I forgot all about it and then
one day I got an email telling me there was a copy on e-bay. I got the
book from my childhood for less than 10 bucks.
Now how many used book sellers and garage sales would I have had to hit
to find that book? Way too many to count.
For something things I like the small local bookseller, like the
bookstore I browsed through in Mendocino California one day... and for
others I want the powerful search feature.....

When I made a pottery book order a couple of years ago, I asked Steve
if he could find a book that had been recommended to me; "The Secret
Museum of Mankind".
It's a really weird and wonderful book filled with captioned, very
old ethnographic photographs. No text other than that, no
introduction, no copy right, not even any publisher's information
other than the name and address.
He found me the version published in 1935 (the whole 5 volumes in one book).
It is now back in print in paperback if you're interested.
