computer slowdown / spyware

Eleanora: One possibility is that your computer has become loaded
with spyware---little programs that report your electronic activities
back to their source, something like cookies, but more clandestine
and devious. As I understand it, these are usually used to track
computer usage for marketing purposes. They don't usually destroy
your computer like viruses and worms can. The main problem (aside
from the invasion of your privacy) is that they slow everything down.

I recommend getting a couple of good (free) antispyware programs and
running them every week or two. There seems to be no single
antispyware program that catches everything. I use Spybot and
Ad-Aware. Through Google you can find free download sites for both,
or you can try the following.
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ (They offer a not-free version,
too, but the free one works perfectly well.)
Spybot:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,22262-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html

Just install, run, and follow their instructions. You may be
surprised at how much spyware you have on your computer. My
accountant had a similar sounding problem and found nearly 300
spyware programs on his computer!

Turning off the cookies in your web browser helps prevent
spybots from slowing down your computer. To turn off the
cookies in Mozilla Firefox (the browser I use): Click on
Tools at the top of the screen, and then Options from the
drop-down menu. Remove the check mark from the box labeled
"Allow sites to set cookies."

Then click "Review Cookies." You will probably see a long
list of advertising cookies. Click "Remove all cookies."

Visiting Youtube slows down my computer unless I first turn
off the cookies. The spybots at Youtube have found a way to
infect even computers that are running Spybot and an
anti-virus filter in the background.

Some sites, such as Yahoo, require cookies enabled in the
web browser. After visiting those sites, I turn the cookies
off again.
