Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I am SOOO not a computer person, but
I have saved all the suggestions for further perusal. As many remarked,
macs are not often virully afflicted. My spouse who is my in-house techie
does all the spam filters and all that what all without me having to know
about it.

Anyway, here is the first suggestion I got which was off-list and did
the trick, so I am including it here:

....if you're using OSX, then you should find your Disc Utility program,
it's probably in your Applications folder. You're going to use the Disc
"First Aid" part of this program. When you open it, click on the icon of
your hard drive, and then click on Verify Permissions. Once that runs,
\it will tell you if you have any errors. If you have them, you should
repair them and it probably will solve the problem.

Thanks very very very, as always. I am so relieved to have my
computer back.

For PC computers: The Disk "First Aid" sounds like the Mac
equivalent of Norton Utilities, which does wonders at
keeping Windows running. Norton Utilities, which comes with
Norton System Works, has saved my computers many times over
the years.
