I am looking for colored slip recipes that I can use with cone 6 number
45 stoneware. I would like to make bold colors like apple red, deep
blue, and yellow. Does anyone know where I can find these recipes? I
was able to find recipes for brown, black, medium blue, and green.

Thanks,

Try substituting red, blue or yellow stains for the colorants used in the
other slips.

Hi Judy,

Try using the slip recipes that you already have, subbing stains for
the existing colorants. For the red, try an encapsulated stain, for
the blue you should try cobalt in several strengths, and for the
green, many green stains work well. Do line blends to find the
correct percentages of the colorants. If you want to try other slip
recipes, look in the clayart archives; there are many good recipes
there.

Hi, Judy,
I use engobes at cone 6.
I have done a small amount of experimenting with the addition of stains, but not
striving for especially bright colors.
I have not been able to get the yellow past a very pale yellow, also the blues come out
somewhat pastel, or brighter, but still light.
The brightest blue that I have gotten is with cobalt.
I will look back at my notes and let you know which specific stains I haved used, if you want.
Some were Mason, and a few were something else sold through Axner.

The colors will come out brighter if they are painted onto a white clay.

Check out either last months or the one before PMI articles by Wayne =
Bates.
I am running some test on these. Depending on the colors you use you may
need calcium in the slip and or glaze to get them to work i.e. chromium
reds ,and no zinc for the chromium greens. He also list several clear
glazes. I have had quite a bit of trouble just putting colorants in the =
slip
I have standard 365, grolleg ^6 porcelain. Works for some not others and =
to
find the best clear for over top, am still looking. Hope one of the PMI =
ones
work. It is a great issue regardless.

Hi Judy;

Try These:

Slip Recipe ^04 - 12

Ball Clay 75

Kaolin 10

Flint 10

Feldspar 5

Creamy white in oxidation.

Add 1% Cobalt Carb. for light blue, 3% for dark

Add 7 - 8% Rutile for a cream/orange/yellow

Add 5% Red Iron Oxide for brown

Add 7 - 10% Copper Carbonate for mid green (+ Chrome Oxide for forest
green)

Experiment with other colouring oxides, manganese, nickel, chrome, vanadium
or mixes of them, and stains.

Cheers,
Lisa Elbertsen
