Hi Bruce, Marcia, and all,
Thanks, Marcia, for those tips. Never heard of the alcohol spray but
I will remember to try it.
My method is maybe halfway between Firth's and Marcia's. I measure
by volume and it always works.
Approximate volume of plaster needed. That is the amount of plaster
to use. Two thirds of that is the amount of water. Example: a three cup
pour will require 3 cups of plaster and 2 cups of water. Dump plaster
unceremoniously into the water and mix by hand for 5 minutes and it
is ready to pour. Water is comfortable temp, not hot or cold.
I no longer remember the arithmetical logic that led me to this way of working
but at one point Vince proved why it works. The weights cancelled each other
out in some manner and led me to this formula.
Always use fresh plaster. Know your supplier and don't buy a bag that
has been sitting around for a while. My supplier only buys enough so that
it gets to the customer fresh. When I get the plaster I put the bag into a
plastic garbage bag and tape it up so the plaster remains fresh. Always
works fine. Lumpy plaster should be jettisoned, it will not work well.
Best,
Eleanora....I like to make molds in the winter when the woodstove is going
as they dry so nicely but this year haven't found the time to do it.......
