If you teach ceramics at the K12 level, I want to hear from you!

I am writing a story about art in the classroom, and I am most
interested in your thoughts on the role of art education in today's
schools, the apparent decline in the number of art classes offered
because of the increase demand on "core education" classes, and what you
do in your classes to encourage and motivate kids.

As you may know if you attended NCECA last month, the American Ceramic
Society is developing a new website, ceramicartsdaily.org, that is
scheduled to launch in May. I am responsible for writing a weekly series
of newsletters that will be emailed to subscribers, and hope that I can
include your opinions in one of my first newsletters that will coincide
with Teacher Appreciation Week.=20

John,

I was an educator in the public schools (K8) it seems eons ago.

I believe the arts have two important roles in education.

First it is a subject where the student can succeed. There are many
students that become discouraged with school because they do not see
any "value" in the subject matter. My belief is that they do not get
positive feedback from the class. Not that the teacher does not try to help
and encourage them, but with successive near failing grades would you want
to continue. In art, a student can witness their own growth and improvement.

Second it allows them to express themselves non-verbally. The ability to
make a statement about your self is what the students are trying to do with
their dress and attitude. To write a succinct statement about your feelings
on a subject is a very difficult task; there are many rules that must be
followed. Writing is tough.
