skutt 818 question

Anyone out there have a Skutt 818? I was just given one by a friend who is
leaving the biz. it looks in excellent shape and am excited to have this
little shorty in my studio.

Although I have already been to the skutt web site, I can't find much info
on the older models. this one has a manual controller and a kiln sitter.

I know how to work it, but I am interested in any experiences - good, bad,
weird, inconsistent, fantastic - that anyone may have had with this kiln.
Is it OK for glaze firings (I go to ^7), or should I use it only for small
bisque runs and glaze tests? I have always wanted (and now need) a test
kiln, so I'm a little giddy.

feeling like a kid with a new toy......Lo

I have a Skutt 818 and the little sucker fires up fast! It's manual and can fire up to cone 10, but I work with earthenware so I do low firings. Since I am only 5'", I find it a perfect fit as the larger ones which I have had close encounters with at clay workshops are somewhat intimdating - as in the Jonah swallowed by the whale concept!!! Don't want to be in the belly of a kiln, just want to retrieve goregous, fired pieces of clay -which I am still working on to achieve!
Wet and dreary here in the Blue Ridge Foothills of VA this a.m.

PS if you want documentation, I have my book with all the info...send me a fax number and I will send you info.

Lois - I have a Skutt 818, manual with sitter, which I bought from another
potter who had never fired it. I've been using it for 6 years, and it
fires well. I do both bisque (^04) and glaze (^5-^7) firings in it. If
you contact Skutt customer service by phone or email with the model and
serial number of your kiln, they can tell you when it was manufactured and
how high you can fire it. Mine is three sections high, and according to
Skutt will go to ^10; however, I have only fired it to a max of ^7. The
middle section on mine tends to fire 1/2 to 1 cone higher than the top and
bottom. If yours is a 2 section, you probably won't have this variance.
It's a bit of a challenge for 5"3" me to load the bottom of its narrow but
27" high cavity. The only problem I had with the kiln is that the latch
that's supposed to keep the lid up did not work well. Once, when I was
head and shoulders into the bottom, the lid fell on me. Think backside
and stubby legs sticking out between the lid and kiln :-) Fortunately, I
was not injured, but my pride was severly bruised.

Have fun with your new toy!

Dear Lois;

I have an old Skutt 818. Skutt still has parts for it and provided a manual
for me for free. The kiln is rated for a maximum of cone 6 so practically
you're pretty much limited to cone 5 and below. I use mine for both bisque
and glaze firing. The manual firing and kiln sitter work quite well. If,
however you require cone 7, you're pretty much out of luck with glaze firing
with this model.

Write me offline at buffalo@bbs-la.com if you need more info.
