Our studio bought 2 new Shimpo kilns this last year - cone 10 (23X27
automatic digital and 28X27 automatic digital). One of them has been used
primarily for bisque and occasionally for glaze cone 6. The other has been
used more often and for glaze - again cone 6. We have 3 other really old
kilns that are running most of the time for bisque. Both Shimpo kilns
crashed this last week. The repair man came out and said it was the
pyrometers and replaced them but the kiln failed to fire this Friday. It
ran for 12 hours and never got above ~250. I have never heard of a kiln
failing within a year let alone 2 at the same time. I really like my Shimpo
Whisper wheel but I'm not having nice thoughts right now on the kilns. Has
anyone else had experience with these kilns?

The problem may be burned out relays. Occasionally a
manufacturer receives a batch of parts that pass every
inspection but fail prematurely in the field. If your two
kilns were made at the same time, defective parts would
explain why both kilns failed at about the same time.

I thought I should post that the issue with the Shimpo kilns was dealt
with and both kilns are now working well. The new manufacture of the
Kilns (Shimpo returned ownership to the original makers this last year)
was very prompt, courteous and helpful in dealing with the problems. In
one case it was the thermo-couplers that failed and in the other a
computer component (I believe - I'm tired and spacey but wanted this
posted before I forgot again). I will update if I have forgotten anything.
