Ok, I have been a lurker for a while, now I want something. Isn't that the
way it is most times. We watch, we digest, then we come up with a question,
call ourselves names, apologize, then jump right in....
I am an Art Teacher, my main interest is in throwing, I am trying to combine
two techniques in an odd project using incompatible materials, and need
advice to make it work. I am using moulage to do body part casting then
using plaster of paris to fill the mold. I really want to cast a hand in
clay, and am thinking of using a slip. HOWEVER, the moulage is a latex
rubber stuff, and is definitely not absorbent. I am wanting to capture the
fingerprint, life line details that I can using moulage and plaster, but how
can I replace the plaster with clay and fire it to give it some degree of
longlivity?

Nancy,
Dry mix 20% plaster, 40% fine silica,
40% clay. Sprinkle into some water
and let slake a few minutes.
Stir and pour into the latex mold.
If you are careful, you might be able
to figure a way to slosh coat the
hand and make it somewhat
hollow or you can just cast it
solid.
The mixture is one often used for
investment casting.
It must be allowed to dry very
thoroughly and fired very slowly
to avoid a steam explosion when
left solid.
