canadian (ontarian actually) summer workshops?

Hello all,

I (finally)got my April Ceramics Monthly
and was dissapointed to find what looks
like only two intermediate to advanced
summer workshops in Ontario. Does anyone
out there know of others in Ontario,
western Quebec, or in a pinch northern
New York or Eastern Michigan. I'm a
little wary of US travel this time
around -I'd rather not pay for the
pricey and
not-guaranteed-to-arrive-on-time
passport now required to cross the
border and the last time I went south
the engine fell out of my car causing
immense expense and hassle -I still
haven't recovered from the experience!
and the car I'm driving now is not much
newer than the one that self destructed.
I'm looking for an intensive, hands-on
workshop of the 5-day find-your-voice
variety. Trying various firing types
would be fun but I'm (at least for now)
limited to electric at home so I'd like
the focus to be ways of making and
seeing forms.

Suggestions anyone?

Eleanor Hendriks

Hey Eleanora
=20
I'm not bashing CM, but unfortunately, they don't always provide the most c=
omplete list of what's going on, especially north of the US border. This is=
where we miss Contact Magazine eh?
=20
When I used to live in, Ontario Canador College (North Bay) used to have we=
ek long intensive workshops (called Artsperience http://www.canadorec.on.ca=
/ProgramInfo/ContinuingEducation/Artsperience/Index.cfm) on a variety of su=
bjects. You might like to call or click on the link i just mentioned to get=
a brochure to find out what they have on the roster for this yr.. As I re=
member it wasn't overly expensive and staying in rez was reasonable as well=
.=20
The other place I know had classes was in Haliburton but I can't remember t=
he actual institution's name.
=20
And this may be a no-brainer, but you might like to contact the Fusion (The=
Ontario Clay and Glass Association) office in Toronto as they might be a l=
ittle more up on what is currently going on. Here is a link to the list th=
ey have compiled for clay and glass courses around the province http://www.=
clayandglass.on.ca/classes.pdf
but you might learn about any hot new classes for the summer if you call.
=20
You could try the Ontario Craft Council or Sheridan College as well.
=20
Sorry i don't have any specific workshops for you, but hopefully you find s=
ome of this info useful.
Cheers!
Anne
(who is sad to be missing yet another Fusion Conference this May)

Hi guys!

I live in Northern Ontario, and I'm constantly looking for courses and workshops to further my clay pursuits.  I've found some pretty good summer courses through St. Lawrence College, in Brockville, and Canadore College in North Bay.  I think St. Lawrence is offering some courses in alternative firing techniques.  The courses are usually a week long, and they count towards certificate programs...accommodations are also very affordable!

Good luck with your search!

Tracy

Hi Eleanor;

www.missa.ca is worth checking out. Although not in Ontario it is located
on Vancouver Island in beautiful BC!

Regards,
Lisa
