Just got membership letter from NCECA, which I'm sure most of you have also
gotten, but for those who haven't, NCECA 2008 will not be in New Orleans.

Here's a snip form the letter:

"Consequently, and with the continual work of both our staff and board
members collecting information on alternative sites, along with the guidance
of our advisory board as well as our senior advisor, Joe Wedding, several
potential venues were pursued. We considered a wide range of issues that
guided our selection of a suitable replacement city, some of which included
acceptable dates in March of 2008, cost, hotel space, programming and
gallery facilities, along with location, dining and other intangible aspects
that help add greatly to the NCECA conference experience. Through this
detailed effort, which took several weeks to complete, we were fortunate to
discover that one location, Pittsburgh, PA, met these requirements better
than any other site we researched for the preferred time period.
So, it is with great satisfaction and pleasure that I officially announce
the selection of the city of Pittsburgh to our members, as the 2008
conference site for March 19-22, 2008."

March in Pittsburgh - BRRRRRRRR!
I know, I was born there!

changed it yet.

I sent this in when Clayart was down, so am resending with the hope it gets
on this time:

I have been lucky to have attended four NCECAs. My first was Charlotte,
thanks to Bonnie Hellman. Without her urging, I would never have gone and never
realized what I was missing.

I had a wonderful time this year, but I did find the seminars and
demonstrations disappointing. I gather from others with whom I chatted, that I was not
alone in this. But, the demos in the vendors' hall were great and a pleasure to
watch. I met people in the vendors hall, had a ball looking not only at the
demos but at all the new tools. Spent far too much money on new toys, but have
come back delighted with all my purchases.

The highlight of my experience was Clayart. Thank you, Mel, for making it
possible for all of us to get together, renew past acquaintances, and make new
friends. Had some lovely conversations (too many people to name), but thank you
all for sharing your time with me. The mug exhange is always such fun, and I
was glad to be a part of it. I was happy that my mug went to a wonderful
person, and it was the second time he got one of my mugs! I also love the seeing the
work of other Clayarters, so enjoyed the display.

I only got to three shows, but one was the Orton Cone Box Show, which I have
never seen before. Some of the pieces are really fantastic, and I was honored
to have my entry in such great company. I was delighted to meet Inge, having
corresponded with her. Thanks to the Clayart Room, I also got to meet Jean
Lehman.

Finally, it was all over, but on Saturday night, my husband, Jai, and I went
down to the Omni lobby to have a cup of coffee. Lori Leary and Gail Dapogny
were in the Palm Court about to have some dinner. They asked us to join them, so
I was able to introduce Jai to two of my Clayart buddies. We had a lovely
time with them, and when we parted, Jai said he could really understand the
meaning of my Clayart friendships.

Thank you everyone, and, Lori, Jai tells me we ARE going to Phoenix. I am
keeping my fingers crossed and will begin saving my pennies from tomorrow.

Hope to see you all in Phoenix.

First time at NCECA-
Drove into town Thursday in the pouring rain- left early Saturday
morning in snow that didnt let up until State College Pa. The Sun was
shining pretty well in between.
There was alot for a first time high school art/clay teacher
attendee - As Jeff mentioned the Bill Daley panel was a true highlight-
alot of inspiration projected by the panelists- K-12 exhibit and the image
forums I attended were excellent. I did attend some panels that were less
than such and they were on the studio- professional topics as others have
already mentioned- and that seems like a major mistep. The dual screen
artist demo setup was very effective- but alot bigger than I had figured
on- very rock starish- I kept waiting for Garcia to step out of the wings-
My gallbladder sproinked a stone a couple months back so I had to
pretty much eat out of a cooler the whole time - almost didnt go but the
doctor said as long as I ate low fat I would be allright- Some of the food
descriptions I read on the list almost put me in the hospital though-
I went to the Randall Sessions on Friday night and I was surprised
by how good the music was - and how good a guitar player Joe Nedri(sp)is.
(the music store owner character from Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood and
Pittsburgh native) He belted out some serious solos as the band covered
George Benson material in a medley.
Also great for me was the chance to hang out with my Dad. He didnt
attend the conference but he went to CMU years ago so he had a blast
revisiting the city- he said the Warhol museum was excellent-
The real story of NCECA and the Clayart scene in particular is how
willing people are to make you feel welcome- I was prepared to be pretty
well ignored when I walked in the clayart room the few times I did- and
someone always had something to say- a greeting- some clay talk- It was
great- and a warm thank you. The Bill Schran kiln shelf talk was good and
the mug exchange was great- I have a nice Rhonda Clark mug at home now. It
was also a thrill to say hi to mel in person.
I also know that I missed alot of stuff- in particular some of the
satellite shows- but I knew going in I couldnt see everything- My only
real regret is that the time on the St. Francis hospital demolition
changed and I was out of town by the time it came down- saw it on you tube
though.
thanks guys-

This was our second trip to NCECA, we went to Louisville as well. We
includes myself and five other potters from London Ontario.

The beauty of this great event is that there is something for everyone. All six
of us went off in different directions because there was just such a diverse
array of things to do and see.

We arrived a day early so we could go on the bus tours. Now, you have to
admit, the logistics of having all those galleries - all those exhibits - is mind
boggling. Everyone of us thought "our tour" was the winner. I went on the
Oakland Shady Side Route where the winners, for me, were at Morgan
Contemporary Glass Gallery (Japanese Threads) and the Ellis Armory
especially Slipstream. Considering Pittsburgh's wacky road system, it did not
surprise me that the buses could not keep on schedule, it's just unfortunate
that we had to wait in the rain, but hey, it was fun talking to all the other
passengers, getting to know them, finding out where they were from and
their involvement with clay. Anyway, kudos to the organizers of the bus
tours, it was well worth it.

Me, I'm not a demo person not in such a huge venue, instead I went to the
seminars and panel discussions and the videos. I loved the videos because
you could see a complete demo from start to finish. I agree that the Sylvia
Hyman video was terrific, can't wait to show it to my friends.

Other highlights were the Sante Fe dinnerware show, the shopping,
shopping, shopping, K-12 show, and the Regional Student Juried Exhibition
at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. What stood out most, what was most
inspiring? Bill Strickland!!!!!!!!! Wow.

I'm already planning on going to Phoenix, maybe then I will be able to meet
with the Clayarters. Thanks to Linda Stauffer and the rest for posting your
photos.

I enjoyed NCECA this year. This was my second NCECA, with last year
being the first. Compared to last year I spent more time at the
exhibits, than the programs. I was not that excited about most of them,
but it was because of my interests, not necessarily the programs.

I guess the highlight was the shows. I took the Northside Tour but
didn't finish it due to bus problems. The last one I went to I was the
only one that got off. The exhibit took about 5 minutes and then I
waited 30 minutes (give or take) for the bus. So I went back to the
hotel and the Clayart room. Bonnie was there and said she and Cheryl L
were going to go to the Standard Clay Exhibits, and a couple of others,
so I joined them and Steve. I had a great time. The exhibits were
great. Standard did a bang up job. And it was great to spend time with
Bonnie, Cheryl and Steve. I went to the first business meeting and won
the $100 vendor prize, after they called many people's names that were
not there. That was a treat.

On Friday I joined Rikki and Jennifer B on an excursion to the Frick
Mansion, Car Museum and Art Museum. The called Steel was an exhibit of
artwork about the steelworkers and the city during those times. It was
wonderful. One of the best parts was the conversations with the taxi
drivers. You get to know so much from the working people about there
town.

It was great to get to know more clayart people. And I got Fred's mug.
What a treat.

My only regret was not knowing about the Frank Lloyd Wright Tour before
I had made plans.

Sean,
My dad went to CMU also but back then in the dark ages it was Carnegie Tech. Was glad to hear that Joe Negri (I think that is the correct spelling) is still playing guitar. He is someone I remember both from Mister Rogers and other area venues when I was a child and later. I am nearly 50 now. -- Kim H.

The demolition rocked! A cherry-on-top finale to NCECA.
A yummy side treat - the fabulous stoneware mural in a
back hallway of the William Penn/Omni Hotel - it ought to
have been a tour stop of its own.
