Dear Vince,
I think this one has been round the houses a few times.
Black Iron oxide seems to have a solid state reaction with any silica =
that is freely available.
2FeO+ SiO2 =3D Fe2SiO3. This is Fayalite, a compound with a melting =
point of 1205 deg C.
The decomposition of Red Iron Oxide without the assistance of a =
reducing agent seems to happen in excess of 1300 deg C. Oxygen =
discharged in the reaction bubbles through a glaze to give Oil Spot =
effects. I am certain John Britt has published this in CM.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.
