seeing and art

i think one of the great gifts of nature is the
ability to see, and understand what we see.

i think in many ways artists see the world in 3D.

same for color...many artists/crafts-people have a pallet of visual
color that is far beyond the normal world view.

how many times do potters, as they are making pots,
actually `see` the pot, as it will come from the kiln.
i know i do.

it is one of the problems that potters face when opening
a kiln.
`damn, that is not what i had imagined`.
so. we reject the piece as unsuccessful...but, it may be
a damn good pot. as warren mackenzie has said many times.
`accept what the kiln gives you...look beyond what you think it should be.`

it is the great problem for `visually talented` kids in school.
they never get any credit for their rare talent. those that
read and can memorize are considered... `smart`. if you cannot
do those school tricks...well, you are considered `average`.

about half of all kids going through school are not capable of
doing academics...of a high order.
but, often they have visual talent, hand eye talent, 3d talent.
they can become workers of great skill, builders, makers of things.
and, they do. often by default. but, it is a shame when they feel
that they were `less than accomplished` in school.

met one yesterday..a former neighbor...she just stopped out of the
blue, just to tell
us how she loved us..our family, as she grew up in a `crazy` house. i
had not seen
her or heard from her for thirty years.

she and her husband have lived in alaska building log homes, working
as self taught contractors...making things...both of them. totally
successful, and really happy. she said...`mel, you were the first
and only person
that i ever knew of that made things, and loved your life...i wanted that
since i was 10 years old.` she did not do school well, did not do early
life well, but, she made the switch to working and making...and now she
is a total woman. i was touched beyond feeling.
