extruder advice required

Hi folks,
I am hoping people who know about extruders will be able to respond to
this ...
I found the following on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300104177594

But not knowing too much about extruders i hesitated, this person does put
one up for auction every 2 weeks or so...
This extruders looks an awful lot like the one i was looking to purchase
but it has a long thin handle instead of a rounded one. My husband wondered
if that means less strength for the long-term. Also, i don't know if
there's any obvious faults or pinch points in this design so i am really
looking for a critique of this model, pros and cons... obviously the low
price is the pro for me, but if there's something obviously wrong with the
design for those in the know, i will pass...

Thanx in advance for the advice!

Anne, in Saint-Sauveur where the test kiln has been going and going all
week and i think i hit gold with my glazes!! Really happy with this round
of results :) Getting closer all the time...

I bought one. It's okay, all I could afford. He wasn't including the dies
when I bought mine.

It's nicely painted, but the paint on the vertical bar that the D ring
slides down chips off when you move the ring.

There is an almost 2" dead space in the barrel- I made plugs to fit between
the plunger plate and the clay to take care of that.

The ring that hold the die is held onto the barrel with wing nuts. If I'm
not careful, when I loosen the nut on one side, the ring falls to the
floor. I've had to twist it back into shape.

There was a little drop of slag that kept the dies from fitting flush so it
leaked clay around the die. I filed it, but have had more luck stopping the
leaks buy putting my clay into newspaper bags with an opening big enough
for the clay to exit through.

The plunger plate didn't fit as well as I think it should have, not being
totally square.

All in all- I got what I paid for, wouldn't do it again.

About the extruder on eBay, I would not buy this piece of equipment. It
does look flimsy. I had a wall extruder that had that ring device on an
unnotched post and it would give way unexpectedly and I would get =
knocked on
the head with the handle. The handle also seems flimsy. It take a lot =
of
pull to get your clay through an extrusion, IMO. I would sometimes have =
my
whole weight (and it is ample ) pulling on the handle and still =
would
have a lot of trouble getting especially handle extrusions through. =
Looks
like the handle could bend.

My advice is I would not buy it.=20

in regard to the extruder sold on ebay by tametalworks, i bought one and i am very happy with it.  it is good steel, very well welded.  the manufacturer (one man outfit) was very responsive to my requests, making me a large expansion box to attach to this extruder.  the handle is not at all flimsy; you would tear out the wall mount or bend the stand before the handle would bend; and, you can make the ring device more safe just by cutting some notches with an angle grinder.  alternatively, i am working up to a power extruder by adapting an Atwood electric trailer jack (see on ebay also) to this device.

my opinion is  buy it.  it is well made and much cheaper than comparable models.  however the canadapost was very slow, pay some extra for UPS to get it quicker.  and, remember, you are paying in Canadian dollars - a bonus in itself.
