handmade than yours.

I have been following this thread for about a week now
and sat on my fingers so I didn't reply before I thought
about it carefully.

Elizabeth Priddy said,

"It means that it is like people arguing about what a word
means in common usage. Just get a dictionary and be on
about your business, ...."

I looked up handmade...thought it might help set me
straight:

"Kernerman English Multilingual Dictionary (Beta Version) -
handmade adjective

made with a person's hands or with tools held in the hands,
rather than by machines
Example: hand-made furniture "

I looked up handcrafted..this is what I found:

"American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source
hand=B7i=B7craft (han'de-kraft' ed) Pronunciation Key
n.
Skill and facility with the hands.
A craft or occupation requiring skilled use of the hands.
An object that is crafted by skilled hands. "

Now I'm even a bit more confused, are my mugs more
handcrafted than "Judy Blow's" mugs
because I pull my own handles on the mug and she extrudes
and attaches hers???

or ..because I mix my own clay and wedge by hand because I
don't own a pugmill???

Or can I call mine more "handcrafted" because a jury of my
peers says I'm "skilled".

Is my jewellery " not" handcrafted because I designed some
slip casting molds to make the production
process easier and " Judy Blow" uses strictly press molds.

I must admit I've snarled to myself when I see slip cast
pottery and cookie cutter pottery
demand the same dollar as stuff I make all by myself on the
wheel. Doesn't seem at all fair.

Many customers do not care, they'd just as soon have the
"other" stuff because..
.they all match...they can get more for sure,
and it usually costs less.

I remember the days when pottery wasn't considered "real"
pottery unless
it came from a gas or wood kiln and was fired to cone 10.

Times change, standards change, aesthetics change.....
I tend to agree with Elizabeth ... we best just "get on with
it!
