Kathleen,

Here is SDSU Crawl:

47 Gerstley Borate
31 magnesium Carbonate
19 EPK
4 Borax

Mix it thick.

Another I found by typing "bead glaze recipe" into Google is:

Bob Shay's Bead Glaze cone 04:

magnesium carb. 50
borax 40
gerstley borate 50
flint 10

There are lots of variations but most involve Magnesium Carbonate. You
could probably run a line blend with Magnesium Carbonate (0 - 100 %) and
find a lot of new ones.

These glazes are very temperature sensitive and if you fire them low (e.g.
cone 08 ) they can be "lichen" glazes all flaky and crusty, then fire them
to cone 05 and they will be "crawl" glazes and then fired higher (cone 04)
they will be "bead" glazes. All from the same recipe.

Have fun,

There are so many, especially for low fire. You can pretty much throw mag
carb into any glaze to make it crawl. There are also many different kinds -
alligator, dry, beady, flaky..... I don't know where the GlazeBase is
right now, but there were several there. The Lana Wilson books had a
wonderful crawl. If I can find it in my studio I'll post it, but I bet you
can google it.

Talc and magnesium Carb in large percentages cause beading and crawling.

Have a look at the two sites below....there is quite a lot of
reference to glaze texture..... and examples too.........

John,

an excess in magnesium carbonate could make the
glaze crawl
a lot ?.
