For several years now, my work has been in two or three nice local
galleries. I have been comfortable with the way the galleries displayed
and advertised my work..until now. In a current show, the pieces are
scattered and titles spelled incorrectly. My question is...how much 'input'
should the artist expect? Do we simply turn the work over and hope for
the best??

That just depends on how you feel about your work. You have a right to
determine how your work will be viewed though that right might not be
respected. Any decent gallery would be willing to work with you on this
and certainly never object to having your titles spelled correctly.
Group shows can be testy because of course everybody wants the best
location and that is not possible so you need to be flexible. If you
just take a back seat you can be setting yourself up for the same
treatment next time so don't hesitate to speak out and voice your
concerns. If that doesn't work then find another gallery with more
credible business skills.

I think you can expect alot from a gallery. They are your rep. and a poor
display speak poorly of your work. Most gallery I know are usually open for
imput on displaing with some resurvation. You don't need a bad display of
your work or a bad gallery. Most store will work with you on displaing and
selling, but after you have sold it to them you don't have much to say.
Get your inventory elseware is about all you can say to them. Anyone who is
a good buisness person will nomal be open for sugestions.

Although a lot of galleries refuse to believe it, they are working for the
artist. You pay galleries a commission to sell your work and to represent
you in a competent and professional manner. If you don't believe you are
getting the representation that you are paying for, you should tell them, and
they should respond accordingly. Galleries that don't respond to legitimate
concerns of the artists they represent, can and should be replaced.

Hi Claudia...Missed talking to you...hope things are going well for you in
spite of the post I am replying to.
Go into the gallery and very politely and gently explain how you feel they
are treating you and your work. It does not have to be a fight but you are
in control of your work if it is not bought wholesale from you. EVEN THEN
I would go in and talk quietly to the gallery folks. It is called PR on
your part and their part...both parties need to be satisfied and sales will
be affected if they do not attend to the details. It is respectful to
attend to details on your work and you should not accept any less. Good
luck. As Always Peggy
