Hi clayarters:
Just got back from Alymer, Ont. Canada, having attended a great
workshop given by Tony Clennell. Despite there being an ice storm, and
electricity off, for two days, Tony kept his cool, remained unfrazzled
and flowed with the elements. We were really back to nature, huddled
around a wood stove trying to keep warm. In the morning, since Tony has
the gift of the gab and much knowledge, he was able to keep our interest
and talk about pots, clay, life, etc for a couple of hours. Tony would
have demonstrated on a kick wheel, but since there was no electricity,
we wouldn't have been able to see anything, depite the candles and oil
lamps. We were hoping the hydro would come on for the afternoon. It
didn't.It wasn't until the next afternoon, that heat and light was
available..
After a lunch of soup or chili, prepared on the wood stove, we moved a
wheel, ware boards, clay etc. to another person's basement, many miles
away, and proceeded with the workshop. At least there was some
electricity there. Tony's flexibility, calmness, and versatilty,
certainly showed. Because of the cold, naturally the clay didn't dry
quite as well as he would have liked. Luckily, he is a potter, who uses
few tools, is very adaptable and can make do with the situation that is
given him. He gave us an excellent workshop demonstrating the throwing
of large jugs, jardinaires, casseroles, salad bowls, handle pulling etc.
All in all, we came home with many tips and a healthy respect for an
excellent potter. It was fun. If you ever get the chance to attend one
of his workshops, do so. His uncle Jimmy, would be proud of him for
sure, after the workshop he just gave.
Envious of all you lucky people off to NCECA tomorrow.
Maybe next year when it is a little closer to home.
I'll start saving the loonies now.

answers all questions, no matter how basic. I took a workshop from him last

She does great work, and some of you Clayarters who may not have heard of
her yet should know this. If you get a chance to spend some time with her,
you should take advantage of it. Red Deer has always done a good job of
getting quality craftspeople to teach, and I'm sure you all already trust

WHAT: Kiln Repair and Studio Maintenance Workshop
WHEN: Saturday, April 28
WHO: MEL JACOBSON
This is a one-day workshop, and Mel will show how to
replace elements in an electric kiln, fix bricks that
are already part of the kiln, and generally give some
helpful demonstrations of how to fix all those annoying
things that go wrong in the studio from time to time.
PLUS, what tools one might need to repair wheels, rollers,
etc. Actually, I expect that Mel will do exactly
whatever he wants to
do, in the time we've got. It should be helpful to
many studio potters and/or students. THIS WORKSHOP IS
FREE, AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. However, there are very
limited spaces, because this kind of workshop requires
close-up seeing. If you want to attend, please email
me OFF-LIST, and I will reserve a place for you.
FIFTEEN OR SO are all that are available, first come

if the students here get themselves sorted and organi-

Hopefully this will be of general interest, even though it was
originally directed to Shula.
It didn't go through to "PurpleLama@aol.com" so here it is on the list:
Vince's workshop on colored clay will be held at the Santa
Barbara Community
College, 721 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara. It will take place 9-4
Saturday and Sunday, 7/7 and 7/8.
The cost is $50. However, if one is a full time student working
for a degree the cost is $25.
Vince's brochure titles this workshop "Form and Surface with
Colored Clays."
He goes on to say:
=93Colored clay techniques have been in use for over 4000 years, and
yet have been largely ignored in the evolution of Western ceramics in
favor of glaze surfaces where the true nature of the claybody is often
concealed. Except for isolated historic examples of neriage,
pate-sur-pate, basaltware, sprigging, and marbleized wares, it is only r
ecently that coloredclays have become a major visible prt of the
ceramics mainstream. Colored clays and slips offer richness and depth of
color distinctly different from glazed surfaces. With clay-murini
(patterned-loaf) construction one can achieve a multitude of pattern
effects available through no other ceramic technique.
=93This workshop is designed to allow beginning and experienced
clay-workers to develop their abilities in a wide range of colored clay
techniques. Techniques to be covered include making/mixing colored
clays, marbleized colored clays, design
and construction of patterned colored clays in pinch, slab, and thrown
forms. A great appeal of colored-clay techniques is that very effective
work can be created with a minimum 9of studio faciliteis and equipment.
A slab-roller, spray-booth, potter's wheels and hi-fire kiln are nice
to have, but this kind of work can be done very effectively with nothing
more than work tables and an electric kiln.=94
This two-day workshop will be demonstration only. It will also
include one of Vince=92s interesting slide-shows.

so that would mean that you have no reason to send this message to me in

that would further mean that you pulled my name off the listserve.

I am also a good bit confident that if mel - the list moderator - would ban

so - i hope i am misunderstanding something here.
but everything i see says that you just spammed me.

Jon,
Many people, art centers, and colleges announce workshops to the general
Clayart list. If you are on Clayart, you will receive such announcements
from time to time.
Suggestion: If you see the work "workshop" in the subject line, you might
consider deleting it without bothering to read it. I find, in the course of
a day, that there are a number of topics that do interest me; I simply
delete them.
I have actually appreciated learning about workshops with Ian Currie and
Eric Struck that I would not have known about. For many of us, notices on
Clayart are our most important links to the world of clay.
By the way, I know Rikki Gill. She doesn't even know what Spam is.
Best wishes,
Charles Moore

Hello!
I am looking for a workshop in the mid to late december timeframe in a
warm local. Yes, I want to combine a vacation with an amazing learning
experience. I am located in north america but would be amenable to
almost any locale, asia, europe, australia, new zealand...etc..
If someone could point me to some events or an up-to-date list that
would be great.
Thank you in advance.....
Cheers
James.

I have just returned from a workshop here in Walnut Creek, Ca. at the
Civic Arts Pottery Shop. A saturday - Sunday event. It featured Steven
Hill and Matt Long, " Gesture and Rhythm " , co - sponsored by Laguna
Clay company. They both apply thick slip on their pots with sensual,
fluid results. Matt works in porcelain and does soda firing and Steven
works in B-Mix & fires fake ash reduction . They worked side by side
and showed slides on different days and talked about their work. This
was their first workshop together but they seemed like old friends and
were a joy to watch and listen to. They are coming to L.A. area next
week. If your are near there don't miss them! Check with Laguna for a
schedule. Mike Gordon
