Earth and Fire Pottery on mon 7 may 07

Hello everyone-

Below is an announcement of a fine workshop we will be having here in Northern
California. We are very excited to present the second of a series of educational and informative workshops exploring a wide variety of topics of interest to potters and ceramic artists.
Ceramics and the technological society
An exploration of the potters place in our society today
A three day workshop with artist, potter and inventor Al Johnsen
At One Earth! Clay and Glass in Ukiah, California
Friday through Sunday June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
Join us for a three-day workshop with one of American ceramics' most thoughtful and outspoken artists of our time, Al Johnsen. Founder of the UC Santa Cruz ceramics program and founder of Scott Creek Pottery, (where one of the first extruders was made), Al has blazed a creative path that few can duplicate.
Potter, inventor, oil painter, philosopher, social and political activist, and a lover of life, Al will present an unparalleled viewpoint of ceramics gained over the last 50 years as a full time potter, teacher and inventor. Al has a unique view of the history of American ceramics and of society in general, having worked at the Otis Art Institute With Peter Voulkos and others, at building the first extruder at Scott Creek and to create the foundation for what is today a very strong ceramics program at UC Santa Cruz. Al feels strongly that there IS a place for ceramic artists in America today, even though working with our hands has little value in our society today.
The workshop will feature demonstrations of beginning and advanced throwing techniques and tricks, a hands-on component where students can try out what they have seen demonstrated, and a lot of discussion on the relationship between the working potter and our society.
Ukiah is two hours north of San Francisco and two hours west of Sacramento.
Sign up today. Limited to 20 people. Just $200.
