I have a paper clay tip that I found by accident / luck
I had made a large batch of paper clay and then got really busy.
I left it to dry on plaster and it dried out completely. Bummer, eh?
But no.
I left it there, intending to bust it up an rehydrate it with some other
old clay I had around. (which I will do with most of it)
In the mean time, I goofed on a large form, and left the bottom too
thin. Bottom cracked during drying.
So...
I used a sureform tool and scraped the dry paper clay, as if
it were a dry parmesan cheese block. It made perfect little
paper clay bits, just enough to wet and repair the too thin foot,
not smelly at all.
So if you keep a hunk of it dried out...no smell, shave off as
needed for small repairs, no smelly jar of goo!
yes!

i mix and use paper clay slip, for beginning clay classes, at North Lake
College in Irving..... When I prepare the paper fibers I drain as much water off
as possible.. Then using a dry slip (a little on the dry side for slip) I
mix the two together-- and then instead of adding water, I add rubbing
alcohol.. I keep this mix in an old glaze jar...sealed. if it gets a little dry
over the years-- I add more alcohol.. ( Sorry Mel.. Tony.....i keep the
drinking kind for me.) I have added to --and used this jar --for up to five
years and never any smell except alcohol..
It works great -- no problems.. and NO SMELL!!!!......... Jim in Denton

I mixed up a batch of paper clay last year and added the teaspoon of =
copper
carb to the mix. I had no smell. I still have some wrapped and damp =
ready
to use, still no smell. True, it is partially black in areas from mold, =
but
it still works very well. I threw a small bowl with it and glazed it =
with
my standard white Cone 9 glaze. The copper showed as a very light pale
green, sort of a nice celadon color.=20

Elizabeth: I would be concerned about the amount of dry clay I would
get into the air surforming dry paperclay, but I don't have a
ventilation system to handle it.

I am referring to shaving off aobut two tablespoons.
Your nasal mucus is enough ventilation for this.
And you do it over a bowl to catch the tiny amount needed
for mending work.
If you are particularly alarmist about such things, you could use a
self-contained box cheese grater to catch the shavings.

I'm a little confused. You say you threw a small bowl with paper clay.
I thought paper clay was for hand building and that you shouldn't try to
throw with it. Am I wrong?
