Ceramics and the Technological Society

An exploration of the potters place in society

A three-day interactive workshop with artist, potter and inventor Al Johnsen Friday afternoon June 1st through Sunday, June 3rd
Join us for 'Ceramics and the Technological Society', a three-day, interactive workshop with Al Johnsen, one of Americas most thought-provoking and outspoken artists of our time. The workshop will take place at One Earth! Clay and Glass Studio and Gallery in Ukiah, California, June 1st through the 3rd. Ukiah is just two hours north of San Francisco and two hours west of Sacramento.
The workshop will feature a hands-on component, where a lot of time will be spent by students working with Al to work on what they have seen demonstrated.
Al is the founder of the UC Santa Cruz ceramic program, and of Scott Creek Pottery, home of one of the first hand extruders. Potter, inventor, oil painter, philosopher, social and political activist, lover of life, Al has blazed a path that few can duplicate. He has influenced thousands of students to pursue a life in the arts consistent with the rest of their lives.
Al will present an unparalleled and entertaining viewpoint of ceramics gained over the last 50 years as a full time potter, teacher and inventor. At the age of 84, Al has a unique view of the history of American ceramics and of our society in general. Al feels strongly that there is a place for the ceramic artist in America today, even though working with our hands is little valued by society today. For instance, Al feels that society should support artists financially!
This workshop is for beginning and experienced potters and artists alike. Beginners and Intermediate potters will benefit from his years of teaching the fundamentals of making pots, and experienced potters will benefit from his life-long passion for sharing his knowledge and for producing pottery. Topics covered will be advanced principles of design, the aesthetics of functional pots, blending your art with your life, and a deep knowledge of the very beginnings of the modern ceramics movement and where he feels it is going today.
The fee for this workshop is only $200. It starts Friday evening June 1st, and continues until Sunday afternoon on June 3rd. There are just a few spaces left.

To reserve your space, call 707 467-0200 or email us at oneearth@oneearthclay.com. For more information, visit our website at www.oneearthclay.com.
In addition, there will be a showing of his most recent and favorite paintings, drawn from his life-long love of painting.
Please consider making a reservation now, for we strongly feel that there is no studio potter who couldn't benefit from taking a workshop from Al Johnsen.
Sign up today. Just $200.
