Hello,

Would anybody have a recipe for a good reliable glaze this color or something close for electric cone
6 firing?

Thanks!
Lorrie

Hi Jim,

Somebody sent me this one. I wonder if it is the same glaze you're
referring to? Please let me know, and if it isn't the same one, I
sure would be happy if you could send your recipe.

Thanks so much!
Lorrie

You might want to check out Micheal Bailey's book (the title escapes me
at the moment). There's a section devoted to the range of colors you've
mentioned. Kathryn in NC

Lorrie, there was an Iron Red Glaze cone 6 on Clayart recently made with
crocus martis ---which i tested.. Great irom red.. but when i refired it to
cone 06 i got a reddish, burnt orange color that is great .. I think this
might work for you.

Schran's Orange/Cream (Burnt Orange or Shino)

Flint 2500
Dolomite 1750
Spodumene - Foote 1750
Ball Clay - Old Mine #4 1750
Gerstley Borate - 1999 800
Frit - Ferro 3134 500
Soda Feldspar - Kona F4 500
Talc 350
EPK (Kaolin) 100

Tin Oxide 350
Yellow Ochre 250
Bentonite 150
Red Iron Oxide* 100
* (Special -synthetic) for burnt orange
* (Spanish) for creamy shino

This is from an article by Busch "The look of wood fired" in Pottery
Illustrated Nov/Dec 2005. Schran's mixing of Nutmeg and Satin White
leaving out the ... Zircopax. In anycase it is a lovely and reliable
looking glaze. Ron Roy has suggested a slight reformulation of the nutmeg
for a better fit. Look through the archives for more information. If you
can find the article it shows pictures or email me and I can send you a
pdf file (is that acceptable?). Donna

Donna & all,

The glaze we used in my classes and that was published in PMI was the result
of a simple line blend of the Nutmeg & Satin White glazes.

The soda spar I used was Minspar and we used several different red irons
from different suppliers without much difference.

The glaze is VERY sensitive to application thickness. A thinner coat
provides a orange/brownish coloring and the thicker the application, the
creamier the color becomes.

This glaze and others can be found on my web site listed below.

Sorry, my posting was misleading - I have no idea what spodumene we are
using (foot just came up when I was entering the recipe and I paid it no
mind). The rest however is what we used. I have been trying to track
down what our Special RIO is. There is a very clear and dramatic
difference in the look of the glaze with our different RIOs. Since we
like the Spanish better and it is far less expensive we never bothered to
investigate further but the fact that you find no difference with using
different RIO has me curious. Was one of the RIOs you tried a synthetic
one?

Sorry, I should have been clearer - The irons we used were whatever iron
oxide the supplier sent when we ordered good ole red iron oxide. Some looked
brighter, others looked brown. We didn't order Spanish, Special, High
Purity, or any other specific type.

The expansion is on the low side which means there may be a shivering or
dunting problem with some clays.

Easy to fix in this case I think - if anyone wants to so some testing I'll
provide the reformulations.

Both SiO2 and Al2O3 are low so I would not expect this glaze to be durable
- anyone tested it with lemon?
