small train salt wood success

I am very excited.
I just finished another firing of the wood kiln.

This time, I used rock salt. I am posting pics later today.

I just wanted to repeat the invitiation to people who are coming
to the Natural Instincts conference in June.

If you are coming a day early, Thursday,
we are firing the woodkiln to be opened Friday night
after the opening reception.

You can bring a small bisqued object to fire.
Keep it about the size of a mug as we will have a
lot of people at the conference and I have no idea
how many will be in time to get a piece in.

the ware chamber is big enough for about 50 pieces
roughly the size of a mug. So let me know if you are coming
and plan to get a piece in. Your clay needs to be bisqued
and able to fire up to cone 8. We load the kiln in around noon,
and then crank it up to finsh around 9 PM. The blast will be
especially cool in the dark!

I need a nap, but I will have more pics up today.
Pics are on Flikr site below.
I can't believe how cool some of this stuff is!

Small experimental kilns rule!

E; Congrats on the wood kiln and welcome to the fold.
USU took the macho outta my wood firings and I am now
in the Cone 8 range with reduction cooling. The irony
is the firings are now longer.
Thought of you and how you were coming along with the
woodie. Why did the wheels fall off? Wasn't it going
to be portable? Anyways I like the ground better.
Again congrats!

Thanks!

I knew you'd come around sometime!

The wheels are still a go. I just decided to
build this one first. The portable is for next year.

This one is for the the conference coming up.

I hope it is the kick off for a lot of fun workshops
here in Beaufort.

The 90-100 expected attendees will push the limits of the
facilities, but it will be all good.

Other workshops for 20 or so will be relatively easy. I
have three studio spaces here, one painting, one student,
and one mine(with the electric kilns). You can throw out on the
porch and fire wood, electric, raku, pit, or chimney.

I figured as long as there are plenty of people around to
stoke it on thursday, might as well fire it, eh?

The kiln yard is small, but well appointed. The only thing
you can't fire here is soda, and that is because of the
destruction to the shelves and all that. I am not up for that
kind of grinding.

Calcined oyster shells keep much of the salt off the
woodkiln's shelves.
And we can also fire seaweed in it for extra FX.

I can't wait. I have been planning this party for a while and
I am at the last clean up before arrival stage, so I am amped.
