04 creamy glaze that breaks

updated thu 5 jul 07

Reed Bakken on wed 27 jun 07

Luke,
a simple glaze
I came up with for 04.

frit 3134 50%
silica 25%
redart clay 25%

Works great and won't run,
with a cream color. A good starting
point for glaze testing at 04 temp.

Hé Terre Sacrée,

according to Val Cushing's limits, this could
work at cone 6 :

Frit 3134 42
Silica 15
Redart clay 38
Kaolin 5

Na2O 0.28 Al2O3 0.30 SiO2 3.99
K2O 0.07 B2O3 0.54 P2O5 0.00
MgO 0.06 TiO2
0.02
CaO 0.59 Fe2O3
0.07

Alumina:Silica ratio is 1.00:13.42
Neutral:Acid ratio is 1.00:4.85
Alk:Neut:Acid ratio is 1.00:0.84:4.08

Expansion: 71.1 x 10e-7 per degree C
Oxides causing abnormal expansion:
B2O3

Kathryn,
for a higher temp you need to
lower the flux, the frit.
So I would start with the frit
at 45% and keep lowering it
in 5% steps while raising the
redart clay by the same amount.

This should get youclose to
a cone6 glaze with a similar look.

Also how about trying this

Frit 3134 1/3
Silica 1/3
redart clay 1/3

If that works it would be one
of the easiest glazes ever made, you
never know until you test it.

Hope this helps.

Watch out for this suggested revision - the expansion is very low!

This is close with a much safer expansion rate.

-----------------
F3134............... 37.00
SILICA.............. 25.00
RED ART............. 23.00
G 200 SPAR.......... 15.00
RED IRON OX......... 1.00
----------
101.00

Let me know how it works - I may be able to make some adjustmets if it's
not right,
