Hello all,
I have just gotten a second hand Gare kiln with a Perfect Fire II controller
(model DTP-56DC-E). On reading through the instruction manual, it appears
that this model is a single segment controller, meaning that I can program
an end temp, delay start, ramp, and soak time (I know I have some other
options, but they're still a single segment concept).
I’d like to use it for crystalline and glass, which means that I need to
have the ability to set a second soak at a lower temp than the final firing
temp and soak.
I’m wondering if anyone has tried to accomplish this with this controller,
or has any other suggestions or workarounds in order to achieve this in this
particular kiln. I’m thinking of trying to run a second programmed segment
as soon as the kiln shuts off, by having the final temp be the second soak
temp, no delay, max ramp (suggestions on rate to input??), and the soak time
I need, but I’m not sure what the controller will do if I set a max temp
that is lower than what it currently is reading inside.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or insight,
Karen

I discovered the answer last night by running a trial cycle.
I am able to set a new program once the current one has completed. If
the temp is higher than the final temp you program on this second
cycle, it simply drops into the soak portion of the cycle and starts
the timer.
So, what I need to do to run a 2 soak cycle, is to catch the kiln as
it passes the desired second soak temp and set the following program
to run at that time:
temp - the second soak temp
delay - 0
ramp - max which turns out is 3999
soak - the desired second soak cycle length.
The kiln drops right into the soak cycle at the right temp and holds
it for the right length of time.
Thought I'd post in case others with this older controller are
interested in doing this as well.
Regards,
Karen

So, what I need to do to run a 2 soak cycle, is to catch the
kiln as
it passes the desired second soak temp and set the following
program
to run at that time:
Karen, your controller sounds like the DTC 100C, which was
Paragon's first one. It, too, fired with a single segment.
By figuring out ways around the controller's limitations,
you are teaching yourself the theory of digital firing.
After this you will be able to fire any controller and will
find multiple segments especially easy.

Arnold Howard

Hi Arnold,
Thanks for the post. My main reason for posting initially was that I
wasn't sure how the program was written for the controller (i.e. would it
error out if it encountered a temp higher than the one it was asked to rise
to). It's good to know that it hasn't been "overprogrammed" thereby giving
me a little more leeway in how I use it.
For now I'm holding off on buying an upgrade to the controller as I
should be able to accomplish both my glass and crystalline firings in this
kiln with minimal babysitting. I'm graphing the cooling cycle for it as well
(both with lid lifted a couple of inches and lid down) to determine cool
down rates which should give me an approximate time when I need to go back
to run the second soak.
3 out of 3 successful fuse cycles so far!
