Lee and Tony,
My friend Professor Shimada from Tokyo Geidai goes to China every year
and does an intensive class at the Central Academy of Design at Tsinghu
University. He has been doing this since 1998. Each year the classes
concentrate on a differnt aspect of Ceramic Art. One year the emphisys
was on glaze development from raw materials (some that were mined by
students and others that were commercially available). He introduced
some modern glaze making methods. So there is some exchange between
China and Japan at the University Level and there are other exchanges
with Artists from Japan working at some of the porcelain factories.
Our Group has had two conferences in China where we shared papers and
demonstrations and the Chinese Professor has been able to visit the USA
and Japan as well as a couple of other countries during the symposia.

I think that because China is not yet an open society and up until
recently most folks in Chan did not have the financial where with all to
travel that the exchanges are slower than they might otherwise be.

YMMV,
Rick

I am not sure if finances is it. I know there is a exchange program
in Duluth this year, halfway on the other side of the planet.

Be great if there were more exchange between China and Japan.
Might help break down old animosities. Many South Korean potters
coming to Japan and visa versa.
