presentation to a gallery

So a question to the gallery pros out there- when you make an appointment to
visit with a gallery about showing your work, how do you proceed? I guess I
want to know how you bring in your work- do you just bring a few pieces a
lots of photos, or do you bring a crate of varied work? And it is all in
separate velvet drawstring bags, or little boxes or do you just come in with
your cardboard crate, and unpack it from newspaper? I have 2 appointments
next week, and want to make the best impression.

Thanks!!
Pat in SD, where, bless my soul!, its RAINING!!

Bring a small crate with:

one example of the type(s) of work you are offering
packed to be easily removed and packed again
photos of the variations on the work
a wholesale price list for each item you want to sell
an order form for them to indicate how many of each thing
some biographical literature for them to use in marketing
and a cheerful disposition if they say they need to wait
a few weeks/months before they order.
they have good reasons, buying cycles and such

I learned this at my conference from Jan Francoeur. I have done
it wrong for my whole career and only been saved by the quality
and unusualness of my work.

But that ain't me no more....good luck!

Why not ask the gallery what they want to see?

Some may want to look at only the actual work, while others want to see a
couple representative pots and slides, others want some work & photos, and
still others may want some pots and a CD to put on the computer.

Bring work in a plastic crate using bubble wrap/foam wrap.
You want to show you care about your work and how it is packed.
Newspaper is too messy.

'Liz'beth Priddy hit the nail on the head.

I would add that for initial contact I send a letter of introduction, a
brochure, and as often as not, a CD with a PowerPoint Presentation. The
first two dangle the bait, the third one usually sets the hook. If the
work is as good as the images on the CD show, you should have no
problem with the interview and showing of a piece or two of the work.

God luck,

Regards,

John Rodgers

How do you know that is how they pronounce my
name here in NC?!

Have you been talking to Dan Finch?

E. or L as you have it...
