hydrometers - not in flocculated glazes

I usually have to flocculate my glazes (softener on well water
de-flocculates them, as will neph sy, lithium carb, frit 3110, soda ash, or
wood ash as glaze ingredients). Hydrometers don't work on flocculated glazes
because the clay particles stick together end-to-middle, so the hydrometer
doesn't float right. For the big scoop on floc and de-flocc, read Frank and
Janet Hamer's "A Potter's Dictionary of Materials and Techniques".
