Dear Clayart peoples,
I recently did some testing of three different iron oxides
with the Waterfall Brown formulation from John's & Ron's
great book, Mastering Cone 6 Glazes. I compared red
iron oxide (RIO), Spanish red iron oxide (SRIO)and
Crocus Martis.

The RIO and SRIO were both very similar to each other.
The Crocus Martis addition was very interesting, in my
opinion and is how I decided to make my next batch.
I have a picture of the result here:

I used a brush to apply the glaze to the tiles and from the
left there are 2, 3, and 4 coats. I fired to a "hot" cone 6
where cone 7 was just beginning to bend a little and used
the programmed slow cool as published in John's & Ron's
book.

It is almost black where the glaze is thin as it breaks over
texture. As it pools thicker, there are some nice runny-
looking blue/greens and light chocolate browns where it
got even thicker.

I also did another test of the same glaze with an over-
dip of John's & Ron's Bone formulation using High
Calcium Semi-matte base 1. That test yielded a very
nice golden brown with tiny sparkly crystals that looked
fantastic in the sun!

Thank you John and Ron for such a wonderful resource!
... and thanks, Chuck, for the recommendation.
David
