yes, the original leach wheel was made at woodley's joinery (british for
cabinet maker..).
newton, poppelford.

i bought one years back...1958. it was shipped
to me when i taught at ely, mn...high school. i had to
leave it there..who knows what happened to it.
it had a copper lined splash box.
was made of oak.
heavy frame.
the treadle had a leather strap that held
the peace in place.
wonderful piece of handmade machinery.

most of the gray wheels were made by
denton m. vars...warren mackenzie's brother in law. i bought one
of those in 1961. i have turned over about 6 of those wheels over
the last thirty years...people seem to drop them off at my house.

it would be very hard to find one of the copper lined wheels
made at woodley's. but, i imagine a few of them are still spinning.

doug gates made a perfect replica of the leach wheel...and they
were absolutely perfect....it was not a wheel, it was living room
furniture, that one could throw pots on. he ran an ad in cm for
about five years. expensive...and he sold a few to collectors
and semi-rich folks that made pots.
i think doug is now a dentist...he made great pots too.

No Russell, I'm not sure on the shipwright issue. Got a message some time
ago from John Nance who's father apparently designed the wheel for Leach.
I'm going to see if I can find the email, although I think I posted it to
the list to get it into the archives.

My wheel has a soldered galvanized pan inside the gray pine box.

I have that info but don't remember where I got it. Probably from
someone on this list.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Woodley's is the original manufacturer of Leach Treadle Wheel. It was
originally designed and built by Dicon Nance at the Leach Pottery.
When he left the pottery, he left the plans with David Leach who
later sold them to Woodley's. These wheels were exported all over the world.

I believe that Woodley's is still in business but no longer make the
wheel. Apparently it was a pet project of the father and was
discontinued when he retired or died.

It's on my web page with my wheel pictures.

Wish I could find out more.
