door county penninsula in wisconsin

Howdy y'all -

We're traveling around Wisconsin for a few weeks, leisurely, in our
camper... visiting family, old friends, long-lost relatives...

I was born & raised in northern Wisconsin but haven't spent alot of time
here in the past couple of decades.

I've heard so much about the Door Peninsula, as an Art Mecca, but I've
never been there. Is it still as wonderful as its reputation? If so, are
there any certain areas that we shouldn't miss, pottery-wise? How many
days should I plan to spend to cover it all? Any potters in the area to
visit?

It's quite a detour from our planned route up North but I could easily be
persuaded to abbreviate visits with family and friends for pottery (etc.)
really worth seeing.

Please reply on or off-list, whatever's convenient. Maps &/or details are
much welcomed.

You absolutely must stop at Abe and Ginka//s shop and studio at Fish Creek.
It is called "The Potters Wheel" and is on the north side of town, east side
of the road.

Abe is an old time Chicago/Milwaukee potter and teacher, and his lovely wife
Ginka keeps the shop going. They travel he country every winter while the
shop is closed picking up pots from a large number of the best potters in
the country...many of whom don't sell outside their own shops. Visiting
this shop is like being in a museum of contemporary pottery, carefully
selected, and all for sale. Handle the pots! Analyze them. It should take
a couple of hours just to scan the shop.

While there, go next door to the peninsula Art Center. At Abe's, and most
potters, pick up a copy of the Door County Potters Guild brochure. It will
list most potters.

Hi Lezlie..patrick LESTER cross, here..

I worked as a cook in DC way back in 1990 and 1991 at two restaurants up
there...Wilson's Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim and The Summertime in Fish
Creek. one of the best and SIMPLEST times of my life! Your message in my
inbox this morning brought with it wave upon wave of old memories and
nostalgia...THANKS!

As partial answer to your query I use to really enjoy going to this
pottery..

Back then I had only 2 college ceramics courses under my belt and those were
taken just as an "art requirement" for my then major of Landscape
Architecture. Well the first course covered that...the second was because I
was intrigued and wanted to know more... Didn't have a clue how addictive
the clay sport would be then...

Any way ...YES MOST DEFINITELY take detour to Door County!!....and getchu
some ice cream while up there too!

I can guarantee you will be glad you did. And I will think more on how to
persuade you after I get some coffee in me...

Lezlie, The upper end of the penninsula takes about 15 minutes to drive
across. I would start at The Potters Wheel in Fish Creek. Abe and Ginka
have a top notch studio, pottery shop, and upstairs high end Gallery
featuring Abe's work as well as work from other names you will recognize.
They can guide you to the rest of the must see studios and work in Door
County.
